Secret agent intercepted in DTES
A secret agent of the police was intercepted Tuesday, February 16, when she was infiltrating into the Olympic Tent Village, an area of protest arranged in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, especially for the duration of the Olympic games.

Une agente secrète de la police a été interceptée le mardi 16 février dernier alors qu’elle s’infiltrait dans le Olympic Tent Village (Village olympique de tentes), une zone de protestation aménagée dans le quartier Downtown Eastside de Vancouver spécialement pour la durée des Jeux olympiques.

The story
When people who were inside the zone, which is as big as a hockey ring, discovered the fraud, they asked her to leave. Once she got out by the only possible way of the area enclosed by a fence, two other intelligence agents were waiting.
When questioned, the woman claimed she wanted to give a hand to the protest. For example, the lady in her forties has volunteered to help in any aspect of administrative events.
Also dressed as civilians, her partners, for their part, immediately confessed that they were policemen. But they still continued to play the game.
“I think she just wants to offer different options (to the people there),” said one of them. But moments later, as the trio leaves the area, the situation has suddenly changed, and the woman ultimately confessed “to be part of the Vancouver Police,” adding that it was also the case for her two colleagues.
And to explain the regular clothing, the police told that depending on their assignments, officers may be having their regular uniform or dress with “jeans.” So that day, it was a “coincidence” that the police were dressed in regular clothes, police officer says.
Overthere, some believed that the Vancouver Police wanted to test the barrier of entry of the Tent Village, while others simply felt that they wanted to show their presence in the area.
The new zone of “camping”, which is located at 58 West Hastings Street, is controlled by the elders of the Aboriginal community, which is widely present and claiming the right to their ancestral lands. The brand is currently tolerated by the authorities, but nobody knows whether the situation will last after the Olympics.
Under the slogan “Housing is a right”, several homeless people seeking refuge, as well as company and food provided by donors. The homeless were not the only people to erect their tent on the rocky ground, but also citizens who have a home and wanted to show their support for the cause.

The campaign follows other demonstrations, including one that took place during the opening ceremony of the Olympics, where people chanted slogans like “Homes not Games”, referring to the hundreds of millions of dollars that are invested in this international event, while only a few hundred meters from downtown Vancouver is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Canada.

Lorsque des gens qui se trouvaient à l’intérieur de cette zone, de la superficie d’une patinoire, ont découvert la supercherie, ils lui ont demandé de quitter les lieux. Une fois sortie par le seul endroit possible de cette zone délimitée par une clôture, deux autres agents secrets l’attendaient.
Questionnée, la policière prétendait alors vouloir donner un coup de main aux protestataires. Par exemple, la dame dans la quarantaine s’est portée volontaire pour aider au niveau de tout l’aspect administratif des manifestations.
Habillés en civils eux aussi, ses partenaires ont pour leur part tout de suite avoué qu’ils étaient policiers. Ceux-ci continuaient par contre à jouer le jeu.
« Je pense qu’elle veut juste offrir différentes options (aux gens sur place) », a dit l’un d’entre eux. Mais quelques instants plus tard, alors que le trio s’éloignait des lieux, la situation a soudainement changé, et la femme a en bout de ligne admis « faire partie de la Police de Vancouver » avant d’ajouter que c’était également le cas de ses deux collègues.
Et pour expliquer le port de vêtements réguliers, la policière a raconté que dépendant de leurs affectations, les agents peuvent soit avoir leur uniforme régulier, soit s’habiller « en jeans ». Ainsi, cette journée-là, c’était donc « par hasard » que la policière était habillée en vêtements réguliers, précise-t-elle.
Sur place, certains croyaient que la Police de Vancouver voulait tester la barrière d’entrée du Tent Village, alors que d’autres pensaient simplement que la police voulait afficher sa présence sur les lieux.
La nouvelle zone de « camping », qui se situe au 58 West Hastings Street, est contrôlée par les aînés de la communauté autochtone, qui est grandement présente et qui réclame le droit à ses terres ancestrales. Le tout est pour l’instant toléré par les autorités, mais personne ne sait si la situation va durer au terme des Jeux olympiques.
Sous le slogan « Housing is a right » (Se loger est un droit), plusieurs sans-abri sont venus trouver refuge, mais aussi compagnie et nourriture offerte par des donateurs. Les sans-abri ne sont par contre pas les seuls à ériger leur tente sur le sol rocailleux alors que des citoyens ayant déjà un logement et voulant simplement montrer leur appui à la cause les imitent.

Cette campagne fait suite à d’autres manifestations, dont celle qui a eu lieu lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture des Jeux olympiques, où on scandait des slogans comme « Homes not Games » (Des maisons pas des Jeux), faisant référence aux centaines de millions de dollars qui sont investis pour cet événement d’envergure internationale pendant qu’à quelques centaines de mètres du centre-ville de Vancouver se trouve un des quartiers les plus pauvres au Canada.
